The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
